Habitat Facts

  • The cost to build a Habitat Home is approximately $100,000 due to the skyrocketing price of buildable land in Atlanta.
  • The Homebuyer is rigorously screened, must have steady income, good credit, and no prior Bankruptcies.
  • Homebuyers must contribute 250 hours of “sweat-equity” on their home and other Habitat homes to qualify.
  • Homebuyers rent the home for the first year and must attend monthly education classes dealing with financial management, home care and maintenance.
  • Once the Homebuyer makes twelve “on time” rental payments they qualify for the purchase of the home.
  • The mortgage is a “0” interest rate 25 year note with provisions for equity vesting that preclude refinancing and reselling during the first ten years.
  • On November 7th, 2008, the Atlanta Chapter of Habitat for Humanity built their 1000th home since 1983 with only 13 foreclosures. Due to the strict Homebuyer selection process and ongoing training the risk of failure has nearly been eliminated.
 
 

What will I be doing?

Day 1

Lay floor decking
Sheath panels and run exterior walls
Run interior walls
Tie walls together, straighten and brace
Install lower porch package

Day 2
Prep and run trusses
Deck roof
Felt roof
Install sub-fascia, barge rafters and drip edge
Install windows and trim packages
Interior framing – wind bracing, deadwood, attic stairs
Set up for siding - corner boards, skirt board, drip cap and starter strip
Build side porch and ramp

Day 3
Shingle roof
Insulate walls and ceiling
Continue siding and caulking
Install underlayment in kitchen, dining room and bathroom
Build side porch and ramp

Day 4 
Interior Painting
Finish siding and caulking
Exterior painting - siding, foundation and trim

Day 5 
Interior painting
Exterior painting
Install baseboard, window sills and miscellaneous interior trim
Install kitchen cabinets and countertops
Begin soffit and fascia

Day 6  
Interior painting
Exterior painting
Finish soffit and fascia
Install porch railings

Day 7 
Install doorknobs and bathroom hardware
Clean house interior
Complete miscellaneous items
Touch up interior and exterior painting
Rake and clear lot
Landscape
